Graduate Programs
INMED Graduate Diploma programs are designed for healthcare professionals and learners to increase their skills on behalf of marginalized people. Recipients of an INMED Graduate Diploma will be prepared to lead comprehensive disease intervention and health promotion efforts in low-resource and cross-cultural contexts. INMED currently offers the following three Graduate Diploma programs:
Graduate Diploma in International Medicine and Public Health
The INMED Graduate Diploma in International Medicine & Public Health (DIMPH) equips healthcare professionals who are particularly interested in serving low-resource and cross-cultural communities. This learning experience is designed for physicians, physician assistants, dentists, pharmacists and learners of these professions. The DIMPH includes a rotation at an INMED International Medicine Training Site.
Graduate Certificate Course in International Medicine & Public Health
Each INMED Graduate Diploma in International Medicine & Public Health participant must successfully complete the INMED Professional Certificate Course in International Medicine & Public Health. Please view the Academic Calendar.
When applying to the INMED Graduate Diploma in International Medicine & Public Health, please indicate in which course you will to participate.
International Service-Learning
The second component of the INMED Graduate Diploma in International Medicine & Public Health is a service-learning experience.
Learners serve a minimum of four weeks* at an INMED International Medicine Training Site or an approved equivalent training site where they are supervised by experienced INMED faculty. Responsibilities vary from site to site, and may include inpatient care, outpatient clinic, procedures, obstetrics, night duty, and participation in research, public health, and primary care activities. Please see the Training Site descriptions for full details.
“Service-Learning via Equivalency”: INMED endeavors to recognize excellent international medicine service-learning experiences provided by other institutions towards qualification for an INMED Graduate Diploma. Please refer to these details regarding Equivalency for a past experience and Equivalency for an upcoming experience.
Participants will make an educational presentation to the staff at that training site. The participant’s supervisor will assist in selecting the topic and developing content of this presentation.
Upon returning from the international service learning experience, participants are required to submit a guided personal essay to aid integration of the experience to the learner’s personal and professional life.
*International Service-Learning is ideally at least four weeks in duration. This length of time significantly increases the likelihood that the learner will experience a substantial growth opportunity. However, INMED realizes that some learners have professional commitments that preclude them from being absent for four weeks. Therefore, INMED offers an exception to the four-week requirement. If accepted into the International Service-Learning Reduced Duration Pathway, the requirement is reduced to at least two weeks on location followed by composing a quality improvement project.
At the completion of the INMED Graduate Diploma in International Medicine & Public Health learners will be able to demonstrate through simulation and actual professional practice:
Management and prevention of the leading diseases of poverty
Management and prevention of HIV infection
Care for the health of pregnant women and newborns
Proficiency in clinical skills useful in low-resource settings
Skill in community-wide health promotion and death/disability prevention
Culturally appropriate healthcare
Proficiency in disaster mitigation and response
Design and implementation of team-lead healthcare interventions
Transfer of healthcare skills to other personnel
Application for the INMED Graduate Diploma in International Medicine & Public Health is open to physicians, dentists, physician assistants, pharmacists, resident physicians, and learners in these fields. Applicants must have completed a baccalaureate degree prior to making application.
Notice: INMED International Medicine Service-Learning experiences demand that learners already possess well founded clinical skills. For this reason, INMED requires that prior to departure learners have already completed their core clinical training in inpatient and outpatient pediatrics, adult medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and general surgery. If there is any question as to the learner’s clinical capabilities INMED will call for additional documentation.
All prospective participants are advised to read through the Service Learning FAQ page in its entirety prior to submitting an application.
Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit for the INMED Graduate Diploma International Medicine & Public Health is attained through satisfactory completion of the Graduate Certificate Course in International Medicine & Public Health components. Note: CME is not required for students or resident physicians.
